Last week we had Meggie Sudderth come on the show. Meggie is the student liaison for the <a href="<span class=">deanofstudents.utexas.edu/barbarajordan/committee.php">Barbara Jordan Statue Project. She's in the <a href="<span class=">studentorgs.utexas.edu/ojackets/">Orange Jackets (female honors service organization at UT, they've been around forever) which initiated the whole Barbara Jordan statue thing. The Orange Jackets have a reputation for taking on large projects that positively impact the University and community at large. In case you didn't know, UT-Austin does not have any female statues, much less an african american female statue. There are several statues dedicated to confederate losers, er, leaders however.

Barbara Jordan was a remarkable woman, Texan, American and faculty member here at UT. She was the first black woman elected to congress from the south. She gave a convincing televised speech advocating the impeachment of Nixon to the House Judiciary committee. She did many things first, I could repeat them here or you can just read them at wikipedia. Interesting tidbit: she was a lesbian.

Meggie shared her experience with the project and how it has been incredibly positive even when they had to scratch the initial designs because the public did not feel it captured the late Ms. Jordan's likeness accurately. The new design is amazing, it will be in a beautiful notable spot on campus and is set to be unveiled next spring.

Damn.

Meant to start doing this from the beginning but better late than never. This blog is going to record the escapades, and issues thus related, of "The Vagina Monologues," which is a community programming show broadcasting from KVRX every Monday from 9-930pm. KVRX is a student run radio station based at the University of Texas at Austin. The hosts are Zoja, Diana,, Meggie, Chelsea and me, Mars..

Today the booth was run by Zoja, Diana and Mars. Our guests were Drea and Zoe who are starting this guerilla disco project, to take place in parking garages around the city the fifth Tuesday of every month. The premise is Drea's alter ego, Ana Monopeia, a drag queen, is seeking out disco. She's like a pied piper leading an entourage of disco blasters from all around the city to meet up at a predecided state parking garage, for some impromptou disco dance party.

The first one starts tomorrow, April 1st, at 10pm. Info below. KVRX is going to blast the disco music this time so strap your boomboxes to your bikes and drive up in your cars blasting it if you want to take part. Go ahead and reclaim some space and sense of yourself. State garages are free after 5pm.
